FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

MOM... I'm ready for my first day of school!

Ok...so I had to make a traditional picture of me
"on the way out the front door to catch the big yellow
school bus" for my first day of school. I have my
first class of graduate school today and at the moment
I'm more excited than nervous...so I hope that's a
good sign! Wish me luck...

A Week in Chi Town...

What does one do in a new city with literally nothing to do? No class, no work and no friends to hangout with… (yet!) Well, it would have been really easy to sleep in, sit on my couch, watch TV, and “veg” for a week straight…but I had other plans. I think I’ve walked at least ten miles every day exploring the city. I made a point of finding something new and figuring out something different on each adventure. It’s impossible to drive and take everything in so I’ve mastered the public transportation system and branched out from my apartment. I’ve been up to Wrigley Field, I’ve been down the famous Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave), I’ve biked up the Lake Michigan shoreline, walked to the end of Navy Pier and much more. It’s been a lot of fun!

Yesterday I went to Target to do my school supply shopping… Talk about a reality check! I think that’s when it really hit me that I was going back to school. I was laughing at myself because I felt like I was preparing to go to grade school… I had my pre-made list of everything I wanted to get but I was completely caught up in what color binder and the cutest planner and the best value pencil pack. The only thing that would have made it more realistic is if I bought a glitter glue-stick and my mom was here helping me color code my classes! haha

Not only have I been exploring the city, but I’ve also been exploring a bit of my hidden domestic side.
Like I mentioned before, I’ve been eating in a dinning hall for the last 12 years of my life because I’ve never had a kitchen of my own. I made it a goal of mine to learn how to cook while I was here by myself and I think I’ve done a pretty awesome job so far. I’m not talking about the best mac & cheese and most gourmet spaghetti O’s… I’m talking about using the oven/stove and all those little annoying spices and ingredients that take up space in your cabinets. I can chop an onion just as well as anyone these days! I’ve really impressed myself…so much so that I’ve taken a picture of some of my finest… let me know what you think! PS: That George Foreman guy is a genius! Photos: 1) My bike and the view of Lake Michigan/City skyline.
2) Navy Pier Farris Wheel.
3) View from the end of the pier.
FOOD
1) French Toast w/ Strawberries
2) Chicken marinated in a lime/garlic/cilantro sauce w/black beans and rice.
3) Polynesian Steak, baked potato and steamed broccoli.

Painting The Town Green....

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!!

I don't think there could have been a more entertaining weekend to start my stay in Chicago than that of St Patrick's Day! I took my mom to the airport in the morning so I was officially on my own... I had a day full of really horrendous mismatched green outfits and green beverages ahead of me. It started off with my first El experience, which is the Chicago subway system... I swiped my ticket and casually walked through the rotary gate and then all of the sudden I could hear a train coming. Instead of finding a map to figure out which direction I wanted to go, I chose one of two staircases and sprinted as fast as I could into an open car - I figured I had a 50/50 shot of jumping into the correct one and it seemed as if I had the luck of the Irish was on my side because I was right! I spent most of the day in Wrigleyville, which is the area that surrounds the famous baseball stadium Wrigley Field... home of the Cubs! It's really beautiful from the outside because it has a unique old-fashioned look. I guess that's an easy look to acquire considering it was built nearly 100 years ago in 1914. I can't wait to go to some games this spring! Who wants to join me?

So back to St. Patty's Day.... Chicago is known for its big parade downtown and its crazy tradition of painting the river green...and yes, they really do dye the river! But I decided to avoid the crowds and meet up with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time and join in on his planned festivities. We had such a great time going from one house party to the next and finally ending up at the bars. I can't remember the last time I was at a party where I didn't know 99.9% of the people there. Although, it was actually kind of refreshing meeting that many new people at once. So far, everyone I've met in Chicago has been really nice and there seems to be a ton of people my age, which is awesome. I thought I’d share a few pictures of my first night out on the town here in the big city!

THANKS MOM!

It took a few days but my mom and I were able to make this apartment my own. A lot of cleaning, a bit of rearranging and a trip to the grocery store has made this place a dream come true… I’m definitely not going to want to leave in June! I couldn’t have done it without you so I wanted to say THANKS for all of your help! Come back and visit soon (when it gets warm)!

2 Chicago....

Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote... I spent the last six weeks in Lake Placid training and wrapping up a great season. I won my first gold medal at the NY Empire State Games, which was kind of neat. My parents, aunt, and two cousins were there watching which made it extra special…Definitely a nice way to end the year. Since I've been home, I've been doing my usual catching up with friends... the same old "Hey, I'm back in town...but only for a few days... let's hang out"! I swear sometimes I feel like the phantom friend-in and out in a flash! I've been emptying one suitcase and filing up another... the piles of left over junk keep growing in my room (sorry mom)! But with all this, I don't think I've ever been this excited to jump in the car and drive 12hrs...I'm really looking forward to Chicago!

I wanted to give a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to my friend Kellie and her family...they just had the most adorable baby girl...Taylor Rose. She was the perfect model in a baby photo shoot I had with her the other day... BEAUTIFUL!
My mom and I are leaving at 5am tomorrow morning... it's going to be a fun girls trip! I found an apartment on "www.craigslist.com"... it's a great site if you've never seen it. My place is fully furnished just three blocks from the Chicago campus so it couldn't be more perfect... This will be the first time I've EVER lived by myself without a roommate...I think I'm looking forward to my own space the most! Also, I went out and bought two cookbooks because I'm determined to teach myself how to cook now that I'll have my own kitchen for three months!! YAY That will be an adventure in itself! haha I'll let you know how it goes!
